Volunteer in the Community

Your AFL-CIO Community Services/United Way Liaison:

Greg Larkins (916) 208-4734 GLarkins@SacramentoLabor.org

CLC/United Way Community Services Team Monthly Meeting

3rd Tuesday each month @ 7:15pm

(Immediately following the CLC Delegates Meeting)

Labor Center- 2840 El Centro Rd, Sacramento, 95833

Since 1946, the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) and United Way Worldwide (formerly United Way of America) have enjoyed a cooperative relationship through which they and state and local United Ways provide services to members of organized labor, their families and their communities. Organized labor is also part of the decision-making process at United Way Worldwide, with AFL-CIO representatives serving on the Board of Trustees.

Join your Union Brothers and Sisters in promoting your local union, while helping to build better communities in the Sacramento Region.

The anti-union media takes every opportunity to negatively portray unions and their members. To defeat the negativity, we take advantage of every opportunity to show the world that our union workers are helping to LIFT EVERYONE up!

Volunteer opportunities abound. Sign up with Greg to make a difference today:

To find a Volunteer Opportunity for your Local Union using the United Way’s Volunteer Center Online:

  • You will find pages of volunteer opportunities.
  • When you find a volunteer opportunity that you are interested in, click on the “view details” tab to find out more information about the activity.
  • If the volunteer activity is a good fit for your Local Union, then scroll to the bottom of the page, and you can either click on the “Individual” sign-up tab, or the “Team” sign-up tab.
  • Please inform the United Way’s Labor Liaison Greg Larkins of your interest in a particular volunteer activity. Greg has relationships with many of the Non-Profit Agencies in our region and can assist you in organizing your volunteer activity with the Non-Profit agency.
  • We also can coordinate media & elected officials to attend your volunteer activity, so we can promote your Local Unions efforts.

Travel Toiletry Program

Every Local Union has representatives that travel around the country throughout the year attending conferences and meetings on behalf of their Members & their Local Union. We encourage our traveling Union Representatives to collect the “complimentary” toiletry items provided by the hotel, and bring them back to their Local Union, to add to their Unions collection.

On Labor Day, the Sacramento Central Labor Council & Community Services activists hands out these toiletry items to the houseless guests being served lunch at Sacramento Loaves & Fishes! The guests of Loaves & Fishes are overjoyed to receive these free toiletry items, and the opportunity to “freshen up”!

Please encourage your Local Union to set-up a “Travel Toiletry Program” collection bin, and ask your fellow Brothers & Sisters to donate to such a wonderful program that assists so many!
